Cunningham Madras

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I actually made my own food tonight, and it was glorious.

Cunningham Madras (serves 1)

  • 1 chicken breast, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon stir-fry oil
  • 2 tablespoons (heaped) madras paste
  • 2 tablespoons (heaped) masala paste
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Heinz Tomato Ketchup (squeezy)
  • 1/3 cup white easy-cook rice

Heat a wok until it smokes, then add the oil and spread around the bowl. Add the chicken and stir-fry until it has begun to brown. Don’t fully brown the chicken – it will cook in the curry. Just enough to seal it. Remove from high heat for a minute to cool down, then add the madras and masala. Squidge in a good degree of ketchup – at least equal to the combined volume of curry paste. return wok to a low heat on a small ring for a minute while combining the ingredients – the mixture should be smooth but not runny. add the water, which should be absorbed fully. Continue to simmer on a low heat while cooking the rice; if it starts bubbling, turn the heat off for a few minutes. The idea is to gently cook the chicken without reducing the curry too much.

Boil a pan of water with a good dash of salt on a high heat keeping the kid on. Once boiled, add the rice. Stir thoroughly and continue to boil. Separately, boil a kettle full of water. Check regularly for the rice being cooked enough; once cooked al dente, transfer to a sieve and rinse with boiling water from the kettle. Spoon out rice as desired onto a plate and cover with the curry. Serve immediately with plain naan.

HOWTO: prevent a personal fork of a WordPress plugin from auto-updating to the non-forked version

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Bugged the hell out of me, this, and couldn’t find any information on it. You’ve downloaded some plugin from the official WordPress repository, customised it somehow and want to keep your copy. But in the plugin list in your admin panel, you’re continually being told that a new version of the unforked plugin is available. Even if you’ve changed the name. Even if you’ve changed the URL. Even if you’ve deleted it, scrubbed your WP tables and re-added it.

The plugin auto-update mechanism doesn’t depend on any file metadata, or on polling by the plugin, or by anything else. It depends on the name of the directory the plugin’s files are in. So just rename the directory in which the plugin’s files are stored within wp-content/plugins. Voila.

Here’s to progress

My pet bug is now obsolete. I could not be more pleased with this having happened silently while I wasn’t looking.

I’m actually running out of bugs. Awesomeness.

Relationships

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Wow. I actually feel normal for the first time in years. Here’s to progress.

I’ve also gained a new appreciation for something I’d really always ignored. Who knows how 2001 could have been.

Scratch that

I haven’t had such a good Saturday in as long as I can remember. Here’s to the future.

I’ve got nothing to do for the rest of the night, a fridge full of Bud and some Sopranos to watch. Why not, eh. Anyway, I need some distraction for the quite bizarre level of incompetence which led to a burnt dinner, a melted grill pan handle and several tender fingers.

Off to Ayr tomorrow to see Sis away. Jealous doesn’t go near to the full story.

Towel, thrown

Fuck. Optimism back down to zero. On both counts. Still, fridge full of free beer. Might as well download some new American Dad to take my mind off it until I can get blotto on Friday and get it out of my system properly.

Dang, it feels good to be a gangsta

The bounce is back. Who knows what possibilities lie ahead this week. For now, Kanye, Tony and a wee bit of Johnnie.1

Realising my limits

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Drunk, of course. I have no sober limits.

I rarely do this without opening my mouth or engaging in precise physical activity. I have, however, now realised that Sopranos intrigue is an excellent way of judging the mind’s ability to process raw and unfamiliar material. Without it, I’m reduced to a list of cast members.

Forgot to ever mention how awesome it was to hear this phrase spoken by someone else.

Buh-buh-back

In more way than one. MOJO WORKIN’.

Wordpress 2.2, updated my own plugins to work as widgets. A couple of Sopranos episodes and a quick trip to the shops and this will have been a productive evening. Pity I left Goodfellas down the road.

Internet still capped. Stern words will be had with enthusiastic but ultimately indifferent Indians tomorrow.
